Lots of paint companies recomend a white-type primer. I don't know if it's true, but the claim is that it ensures the the primer doesn't muddy the color.
If I remember correctly, I used a white epoxy primer followed by a grey hi-build primer-surfacer, then a sealer that I think was red oxide (without looking it up) under the base color coat. I had a body shop spray the sealer and color/clear coats.

I just shot a test panel over white primer and feathered it out over the bare metal. From what I can tell it looks much better over white than say a gray but I am still not sure if I like the PPG version of Matador Red. It seems a little dark but I still need to get it out in the sun and check it out.
Mushroombert, what type of paint did you use? Your red looks nice in that picture.
Well, no one actually had the formula for the 69 Matador Red, so after comparing an original 69 paint chip to about 30-years of paint chips, this one looked like a match to the original paint chip. I went with PPG DBC906269 (GM code 27 Cobalt Red.)
