My 68 Firebird 400 convertible has 205 60 14 RWL tires, and I'm looking to replace them with something taller (the car has 3.55s and an auto, so it's not very highway friendly). Because the JC Rally 2s on the car now are correct and in great shape, I'm going to stick with a 14 inch tire. So I'm wondering if 225 70 14 will work without rubbing. Am hoping folks here will share their experiences/thoughts about running this size tire on a 68 with stock suspension. I searched the forum and the FAQs but did not find a straight answer. This kind of surprised me because I suspect the same issue has been considered by many who post here.
Not many responses here or on the PY board. So just to be safe, I'll swap wheels/tires with my GTO, which has 225 70 14 redlines mounted on original HURST wheels. An advantage of doing this is that I'll get to see if I like redlines with the car, which is alpine blue/white top. It will also be cool to see what HURST wheels look like on my Firebird. I saw a Verdoro Green 68 coupe with these wheels sell at Mecum a couple/few weeks ago, and it looked fantastic (sold at a strong $42,500 btw). Unfortunately, I still won't know for sure about any rubbing issues given that the offset of these particular HURST wheels might not be the same as the JCs.
I ran 225s on my '69 for a while with no problems. They were mounted on stock ralley IIs . Really the difference between a 215 and a 225 is very minimal. If the off-set of the wheels is the same , no problem
