Is it possible to put a shifter like Hurst V-matic or B&M Megashifter in a factory 69 console without problems? Has anyone a pic of such a shifter in a first gen Bird with console? So i could solve my problem with the neutral safety switch and the back up lights (the factory linkage to the steering column doesn´t fit with headers).
I cannot say for sure, but the only installs I have seen required some butchering. Maybe someone else has seen or done an installation that wasn't a butcher job.
My 9's shifter is toast as to the option, but the 9's factory console shifter is supposed to be a slap-stick set-up. You hold it down in first, push to 2nd, and the detent is suposed to hold it in second, without entering "D." After you hit 2nd, you release the pressure, then bump it up in "D."
I'm assuming that all the nylon collars/bushings and the pletora of brakets are what make the slap-stick set-up work. Over a 2 year peroid with the shifter out of the car, I have spent a bezillion hours lubricating and studying the set up, trying to find out why it doesn't slap. I have an above average mechanical aptitude, but I'm at a total loss as to what interacts with what, and what's worn out.
If anyone knows the secret to the making the slap stick--I've seen one that--works, please share the secret because there are lots of 9 owners whose shifters are toast.
The slapstick in my '69 works. I haven't done anything to it other than remove all the old, dried out lubricant from the mechanism and lube it with Remington gun lube. If the spring does not pop up, the slapstick will not work.
I had 'Cudas, and all the console autos had slapsticks. They were very positive action, until I had one button stick in and the car hit neutral at 5000 RPM. I was lucky not to spin a bearing in the big block when it went up over 6500. So don't trust the slapstick too much.
I'd like to fit a Hurst dual gate to my console.

I have the side-slap stick shifter in my '69 from a '70 GTO (updated the PG - sorry, ST two-speed shifter). When you push to the pass side and forward, the shifter moves up and catches on a gate . Then you let go for a second, the shifter moves back to the middle and out of the gate. You then push to the right and forward again. No button to get stuck, but be careful, neutral is next! And I don't know if all the shifters are like this, but everyone try it and report in! I'm pretty sure I remember doing this on a couple of later TA's, too.
Mine works the same way push to the right and up for second then do the same dor drive a nice option but i do it carefully i really dont want to see how high my rpms will go before.....lol
I have a B&M console mega shifter in my 68 TH400, guy totally butchered the console up and it looks like crap. I am in the process of getting the correct B&M trim plate for it and fiberglassing what damage was done. I then intend on putting a new NPD woodgrain kit over it. As far as operation, I cant testify to seemless operation because it sometimes skips 3rd and goes right into neutral when shifting. It once went into reverse on me Luckily I was going slow. I think that that was caused by a lack of maintenance, , , I am looking into that too. I would say though that if done properly and maintained it can look and work well.
