Hey everyone I have a question or two. I am ready to send the car for body work since i cant really do much without everything painted, But its not im my budget just yet so im going through the car and buying some time. the car was taken down to nothing and put on a rotisserie so i took the harness out. I want to make sure the engine is ok and runs good now, is there anyway I can hook the harness up and mike the motor fire up without installing it? or do i have to plum the whole motor and harness in? thanks for your help!!

Which harness are you talking about hooking up? The title says starting without a harness.

Should be simple just add power to the coil and a bump start button for the starter.

Just need fuel to the pump and 12 volts to the coil and starter, short the solenoid or get a remote starter switch for it. Use a battery cable for the starter wire and 16-18 gauge should be fine for the coil supply.
You should put a toggle switch on the coil wire though so you can turn it off easier. Make sure the distributor coil wire is hooked up to the coil as well.
It'll run off the battery for a while, no need to hook up the alternator for a test run.
If you're going to run it for any length of time though hook up the water pump and radiator, don't run it dry.

Do it right and treat it as a test stand to tune it.

I know , what you mean , no you dont need to connect the original harness to just test start the engine. Just do as ho428 says.

sorry for confusing you. Yes i mean test start the motor without putting the whole harness back in the car. I just want to check the motor and tune it, only for short times. thnaks for the info!!
