I may have located the original 2 speed transmission for my bird. Would this have numbers stamped on it anywhere for my to verify? Another question, I think I want to put it back in the car. I'm not a fan of the current TH350 setup I have right now. I've had a few people tell me the power glide is great, but I don't have anything to compare it too. Any advice?
Racers prefer the powerglide. They say they are indestructable.
My 400/400 gets about the same mileage as my 326 with a powerglide.
I don't think partial VINs were stamped on powerglides, but I am not positive.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. If you're going for originality, great. What don't you like about the TH350? The ST300 won't get you out of the hole as fast, but if you're not concerned with that and just like cruising around you'd be fine.
I just like cruising, don't really care about speed. The TH probably just isn't setup properly for my car. It shifts rapidly and seems to be in 3rd by 15MPH. I can't verfiy though as my speedo is so far off. With this tranny and the 3:73 gears I feel like I'm at a very high RPM range just tying to do 55, which again, I'm not really sure how fast I'm going.
First, you should verify speed with a GPS (most phones have a GPS speedo app for free) Next, with those 3.73 gears you probably are in 3rd by 20 mph or so. Lastly, changing to the ST300 won't change your highway RPM's, all final drives regardless of tranny are 1:1 unless you have an overdrive set-up. Sounds like you may want to go with a less agressive rearend, maybe a 3.08 or 3.23, that would help with the shifting issue as well as decrease your highway RPM's...just some food for thought.
Good advice. I'll definetely get that app too, that'll help. I was going to go with the orginal rear-end as well. Which I thought the prvious owner had, but he actually doesn't. Sounds like I really need to focus on the rear end gear rather than anything else.
If the transmission isn't numbered, maybe I shouldn't waste any $$ trying to get it here. I don't see where it would really add much value to the car.
Unless you are restoring your car for numbers matching concours level resto it's almost pointless. Now, it might be worth tracking it down and getting to have in the event you go to sell the car down the road to a potential "numbers matching" type buyer, but other than that the 2-speed may be bulletproof for the racers but it is an absolute DOG on the street!
My 67 LeMans had it's original 2-speed in it when I bought the car with only 54k orig miles on it. I couldn't wait to pull that two speed out (slow and slower) and drop my 4-speed in! You will be greatly disappointed if you go back to that 2-speed if you think you are going to pick up any performance of any kind and your mileage as noted above, well as stated, 3 speeds are better than 2!
I'm at the same position. I have a ST-300 that I am seriously thinking of pulling and putting in a 4 speed. Don't care much for the transmission even though it works as it should.

Yup, they have a less than "spectacular" fun factor
I also swapped a 2 speed for a 3 speed, changed from a 256 open end rear to a 355 with a Auburn posi unit. I installed a shift kit with the more agressive shift. I have noticed that with this combo, The car performs great when I get on it, but when Im cruising around town the trans shifts through the gears way to quick, and Im in 3rd before I know it. Im thinking of maybe changing to a more moderate shift kit app. Like a RV shift pattern. I know I will lose the tire chirps when It goes through the gears, but my driving style has changed over the years
200-4r easy swapp basically bolts right in. same length as th350. if your shifting too soon check vacuum modulator. the powerglide will waste lots oh gas. at least stay with the 3 speed. Someone may have messed with the governor.
I had a 2sp in my bird and my wagon. Good strong tranny. Cool factor was it could go to 55 mph in 1st gear! Therefore, a weeee bit slower. Gas milage is great, if you don't try and gun it all the time so just like everything else mpg determined by the driver.
Keep the 2sp if it's a survivor or go with TH400 3sp (if you want stock), 4sp if you think your faster than an automatic with shift kit.

Nope i had to change nothing. personally if i was going to have to pick from the powerglide, th350 or th400. id go with the TH350. good strong tranny, tons of easy to get shift kits etc. and less power loss than the TH400. TH400 is a great tranny but take more HP to run than the 350. powerglide obsolete 2 speeds. Great for drag racing, can be bullet proof built. But for the street ? why waste of gas. i do like my 200-4r a lot i had it built to hold up to 400 to 500 HP, shifts hard and fast 2000 rpm converter. The ONLY thing I had to change was the length of the speedo cable, wasnt long enough, i think it was around 2k free shipping. i just gave a way 2 BOP turbo 350's
