Still hard to believe they can lift something that heavy. Lots of thrust.

The shuttle was designed to glide to a landing, so there's probably some lift generated by its own wings at several hundred knots airspeed. The specific mounting angle (not absolutely parallel to the fuselage top of the 747) is likely to optimize the shuttle's own aerodynamics in this manner.
The V-22 Osprey is able to take-off at higher than its maximum hover weight by angling the nacelles forward about 45 degrees and using a short horizontal run to move air over the rotor discs and increase the lift. As it burns off fuel during a mission it will return within its maximum hover weight for vertical landing (or it can use a run-on landing if still over hover weight).

Thanks man, really cool that they can fly the shuttle in like that.
They must have figured that if a 747 can fly us fatties out of Canada to Hawaii each year (500+) they could carry a shuttle on it's back.
When people look back at these photos in 50 years, what comments do you think they will make given the changes in technology in the next 50 years?
Note: mobile phones where in suitcases back in the late 70's.

Thanks Bjorn, my wife called to tell me she saw it over San Francisco on Thursday or Friday.
I hope we have something to compare it to in 50 years. The shuttle replacement program was one of the first cuts the current administration made.

Yup, it came in over the GG bridge about 10am(a couple hours late). I didn't see it till after it buzzed the east bay for awhile and finally came over SF at about 10:30. I have some friends that were up on the Marin Headlands from about 6am till it came in. Can't wait to see the shots they got.

IMO, this is the best photo taken of the Endeavor's final journey, on its final approach to Los Angeles Int'l Airport:
