Hi Guys, i just brought a 68 428 engine for my firebird. It runs great but its painted red!! Also has some rust on the block and on the heads. I really dont have the money or a local engine shop ( im in Phila PA) to rebuild it. I just want to get the paint off and get the rust off, then ill prime and paint it. Any tips on tackling it? Im thinking of just using sand paper and a drill wire bush to get the paint and rust off. Do you think thats safe? The heads have some pretty deep pitting on them, should i try to sand all the pitting down? Should i spray some rust converter on them? I was thinking of sealing all the ports and having the engine sand blasted, but im not sure it thats safe? Thanks for any help.
On my Sprint I used wire brushes, compressed air and lots of Gunk. I must admit doing a 6 cyl is much easier than a V8 but the concept is the same. I wouldn't worry about getting off the old paint, you can reserve that for whenever you pull the engine.
