Howdy Did someone post here about a place in Cincinnati that dips the bodys to get rid of rust and then rustproofs it? I was thinking it was under $1000. Tried the search but could not find it.
Also how would it be to have the body zinc plated? Would the paint stay on or would it even adhere to the zinc plateing?
The name of the place in Cincy is American Metal Cleaning of Cincinnati. If you are a member of POCI, you read about it in Smoke Signals. Their phone number is 513 825-1171.
That sounds kind of crazy to me plating (or galvanizing, which is a hot dip vs electroplating) the entire body? Seems there's so many nooks and crannies for the nasty solutions to hide in and eat away at the steel. As far as getting paint to stick to zinc, modern cars have a pretty sophisticated process to get the paint to stick. I believe they phosphate the zinc to provide a porous layer for the paint to grab on to. I remember seeing a lot of cars in the 80's with paint peeling off in big sheets. My buddy had a Corsica that most of the factory paint job peeled off. I thought that was related to painting over galvanized steel sheet?
The type of zinc that the metal strippers use is a zinc phosphate wash, not electro galv or hot dip zinc. Zinc phosphate is the lead ingrediant in the stuff that you can buy at the autopaint store to prep metal. It provides minimal protection for a short period of time.
I've chemically stripped several cars, including the one on my webpage, and would never do it again. There is no way to get a protective coating back in every closed cavity (i.e., cowl boxes, frame rails, rockers etc...). There is a place near Detroit that will strip and apply EDM primer (like on new cars) but it's very pricey.
Howdy Thanks Tom I found it in the Smoke Signals magazine. I cann't keep track of all this info.
Someone was telling me about a place that did the zinc plating and thought I would ask. I did not think the paint would stay on the zinc. So I don't think I will go that route.
