Gas tank vent

I'm stripping a 69 bird . i noticed it has a tank vent that comes up from the tank runs along the fill tube and exits behind the bumper. I've never seen this before, I'm going to mount it on my car as i plugged off the "return line" on my car . This would be perfect vent system. Anybody ever see this before. I think it was a 350 2 BRLL car.

That's how the tanks vent on 69's.
Why would you plug off your return line?
