I just took the engine, tranny and rearend out of the bird. Good news is they all are correct numbers with the exception of the carb and intake. I have a intake with a casting number 3784234 and I believe it should be 9794234. Seems like the last 4 numbers match? any chance it's correct?
I can't find whats it's supposed to fit so I do have hope.
Thanks

Gordy

Hi Gordy.

My Firebird parts manual shows the 9794234 as the correct intake manifold for '68. I believe the casting numbers are the part numbers also. Is there any chance you could be missreading the 3 and the 8 and they could actually be 9s?

Just a thought. Good luck.

You will have to post the photos to a photo sharing site like Photobucket and then embed as an image in a post here.

What is the date code? It should be something like G028 (G = July) 2, 1968. It is right by the thermostat base on the water crossover.

It doesn't look like they made any other intakes that end in 4234 other than the 9794234. So if it dates June (F) 1968 or later it must be a 9794234. It is a very good flowing intake that has tested to be as good or better than the after market ones according to Jim Hand's book.

See http://www.wallaceracing.com/intakedata.htm I believe they carried them into 1969 but this chart doesn't show it.

I have already sent the motor into a friends shop for rebuild. I will have him check both the date and casting number again.

Thanks To all,

Anyone haver a 7028265 carb laying around? I'm sure this will be costing me plenty.

I may be running the 7028244 from a 350 Buick,

68 and 69 400 4bbls both used the 4234 intake. Here is a link to the casting/part number on one of mine for comparison.

Just to add to this, early '68 400 4BBL intakes were the 9790140. Here is a picture with the casting number and the date code of October 23 1967 on my original 400 engine. As you can see, one picture was taken before the engine was painted. Not sure what date they switched to the 4234 intake.
