Has anyone out there had this problem after a total rebuild? I have a 1967 400 engine it is a complete rebuild same heads, crank, pistons, rods and a complete valve job.. New cam. rings, I assemble it my self.. Starts up but runs terrible.. sound like I have a large vacuum leak around the carb.. can not locate the leak.. This is a California engine complete with all the smog stuff.. What am I missing
Did you change intakes? Check to see if it has the original year intake and heads. There are mating problems when a later model intake is used on early heads.
All original heads and intake, matching numbers made sure of that before the rebuild... any other ideas.. I am at a total loss.. Thanks for the suggestions..
If you think you have a vacuum leak start it make sure you have no open spark and use brake cleaner spray around intake gaskets carb vac lines to see if the idle changes
Who put the timing chain on? Did they align it dot-to-dot ala Chevy or with the CAM at 12:00 ala Pontiac? If you think that might be the case (dot-to-12), use #6 plug wire to time it rather than #1.
1967 has a unique intake manifold and if you have this intake (casting ending with 286), you absolutely need to have the correct combo of gasket and stainless shield between intake and carb. There are two holes where the carb bolts where exhaust comes in to heat the base of the carb. Not having the correct gasket combo will act as a egr stuck open. Frank.
