Stocking up for a swap-meet later this month in Decatur i recently bought a project 1968 firebird. I knew it was a car worth restoring. I try not to buy anything that I wouldn't mind restoring. This car needs a ground up restoration, but is a worthy candidate with a wealth of good and unique parts. All of the body and glass is there, it will need body work and the windshield is cracked. The trunk is solid, but the front floors will need the small patch panels. The unique parts that I noticed were: ram air hood w tach cut out, factory a/c, front disc brakes, power windows, burled wood console with a clock, automatic shifter (hurst?), 160mph speedometer, 12 bolt posi rear with 4 leaf springs. The front bumper has two holes in the center for an emblem. Most of you guys know what I have found. I didn't until i started checking into the codes on your site. I am a hobbyist not a professional. I have always loved the 68 firebird, just never came across one. When checking the codes off the firewall I was excited to find that it was originally Autumn Bronze and had a leather interior. It was reupholstered long ago. After reading about the 281 code I had to check and ripped open the 80s red fabric and vinyl and its there. The motor, transmission, a/c box and a lot of little parts are missing, of course someone put air shocks on it. The rear end looks original but I haven't checked it for codes. Well I am at a loss now as to what it might be worth now and if I should hang on to it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Agree. The firewall codes are almost meaningless on a car like that.
Post some pictures and a picture of the PHS when you get it.

I appreciate the input, it is the real deal. unfortunately it has been well abused and half parted out. I had it up for sale at $3500 and would have sold it for $3000 until I investigated why it had these options. It has to be worth more, even in this condition. The demand for older Pontiacs is growing, and will only get better. I will try to get some pictures up asap. I haven't gotten a chance to really check the rear end more than enough to tell that it most likely never had double shocks on the drivers side. Thanks
Looking at the Hagerty values the 1968 Firebird values are trending up while most of the other classics i checked are flatlining. I have a 66 GTO that Hagerty considers an excellent "3" to be worth around $27,000. IF this Bird was a "3" it would currently be valued at $36k. They currently value and would insure a flawless "concourse 1" example of the 400 ram air at just over $100k. I'm thinking I should restore and enjoy this one till my kid needs college money. I'm not trying to fool myself or anyone else but, Hagerty's valuation on the first generation firebirds is great news to me.
100K is not likely to happen based on what we saw with the Carnival Red Ram Air car. Also, ram air hood is the 400 hood. While possible you may have found a Ram Air car, more likely it is a 400 car particularly given all the options. Many of the Ram Air cars were low option due to a racing focus. Getting the PHS will resolve these points. Plus missing most of the numbers matching components hurts the value significantly.

I'm thinking about heading to the Decatur swap meet too but was under the impression that is was geared more towards Chevys. Have you been to this event before? Thanks, DaveG.
The Decatur one is well worth the trip. There are all manufacturers, makes, models, parts, parts vehicles, completed vehicles, junk and treasure. Were already moving some things there. Normally only a handfull of first generation firebirds. Im going to try to get $4-5k for the firebird, $6k for the Catalina and $24k for the GTO. Im not expecting much due to the poor economy.
