All,

I am doing the front end of the Bird and wanted to know if the horn relay is necessary. The American Autowire kit does not indicate to wire into a horn relay, just straight from the fuse block.

I am also switching to a single wire alternator to eliminate the external regulator and wiring since AAW does not indicate to wire into an external voltage regulator. Since the external regulator is wired to the horn relay in the old wiring, I figured that is what the horn relay was for.

Is the horn relay necessary for the new wiring setup?

You'll need some type of relay so the horn button switch can trigger the horns. The only other purpose, besides a junction point for the main power wire (as you described) is to provide a buzzer when the key is in the ignition and driver's door is open.

Look at my schematic I drew. It's for a 69 Camaro, but will be the same for 68 and 69 F bodies. Colors might be different too.

I have a delco remy horn relay, looks to be original for the car...it was working before I took out the "creative" wiring.

Anyhow, looking at the connections on it, there are two blade type connections side by side at the top and two screw type vertical connections on the side (I am assuming they are power leads). Question, which lead of the of the blade type connections wire to the horn switch and which one wires to the horns?

I have been working on a '69 400 for several months almost completely rewiring the front half of the car and the interior. I guess the guy who had the car before me was a butcher and not an electrician!!Any way there are no wires going to the relay which is a Delco Remy (may be original-not sure) but has no screw terminals on the side, only four blade terminals. When looking at them in mounted position it has two blade terminals almost making a T at the top, a single horizontal blade terminal in the middle and a single vertical blade terminal at the bottom. There is also no wiring at the horn itself. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks for your help.

The wiring diagram in the service manual should tell you.

I've been working off a pair of wiring diagrams I found on line labeled front half and back half wiring, but do not have a service manual to speak of. Is this something that I can find on-line? If you have it would you be willing to scan and e-mail the diagram(s) that would help me resolve this issue? Thanks.

The service manual is setup that way as well, on multiple pages. Makes it tough sometimes to read if you have to keep flipping back and forth and trying to connect line TT on one page with the same on the next.

My existing horn relay is not the correct one. Like the OP, my car was an electrical butcher job. Can anyone tell me the correct part number for a '69 Bird horn relay? I need to make sure I get the buzzer relay. Thanks for your help.
