I thought it was a good price anyway...at least for my shipping location. If you agree and like to run this stuff, maybe you want to buy a case or two...
Just sharing to maybe benefit others. Probably won't last real long. I have no affiliation with the seller. I just found it while shopping and I felt it was a good deal, only $4.80/quart including shipping to my door...that's quite a bit less than most sellers.
ABORT! Turns out that ain't their "Grade 1 Racing oil"...appears to be maybe their normal SN rated street oil for modern cars...with less ZDDP as needed for our flat-tappet Birds...
In which case this not so much of a deal...
Hopefully not too many lemmings followed me off this cliff. Glad I bought only one case and I have daily drivers I can burn it off in LOL!
On the upside, this is a high quality American oil company, pumping out of American ground, refining it on American soil, with American workers. So at $4.80/quart shipped to my door I still consider it to be a very good purchase...even if it won't be for my 400...
If I get it in the mail and I like what I read on the bottle, I'll come back and update...otherwise...
NEVERMIND>>>>unless you want some for your daily driver...
OK I'm gonna talk to myself one more time here and let you all know this had a happy ending...
After finding phone # for the seller on their Ebay page, I called them, explained I accidentally ordered the wrong grade, but could I upgrade to the correct/better Grade 1 oil for flat tappet engines and pay the difference? NO PROBLEM! The helful man on the phone immediately refunded my err'd Ebay purchase, sent me an invoice for the proper oil that I intended to buy, and I promptly paid him. End price was still extremely competitive at about $6.70/quart including shipping to my door.
So...if ANYONE is seeking a Brad Penn oil dealer who sells for competitive prices, contact these fine folks...and if you want even a slightly better deal, just pick up the phone and order that way instead of thru Ebay, and they'll take a couple bucks off the listed Ebay price due to skipping Ebay's excessive fees...
And if anyone is wondering, what the heck is Brad Penn Grade 1 oil? It's specifically recommended by Rocky Rotella (and others) for flat tappet Pontiac engines, due to still having the proper amount of ZDDP (without additives) which is no longer found in sufficient quantities in modern grade API/SM/SN oils, because it's bad for catalytic converters but necessary for vintage flat tappet cam protection. Here's their website to explain it better than I can: http://www.penngrade1.com/
And searching some older posts around here shows that Vicki Yellowbird recommended Brad Penn also at one time...I know that's another respected name from the past...
Well that's better than the $9 per I spend for RP. I don't put many miles on the car so the oil doesn't get changed out that often and even at the price I pay it's nice to be able to drive up to the local OReilly's and pull it off the shelf.
Agreed. Local purchase is easier and this isn't a bank breaker. Curious which Royal Purple you run? I presume you realize not all of it is good for these motors...their regular synthetics are not, but they sell some variants that are good. If your Royal Purple oil is a modern formulation with SN or SM API rating seal, that's not good...because with that rating the government doesn't allow them to put enough ZDDP in it to protect flat tappet camshaft cars properly anymore. Unless of course you're putting in an additive as well.
But they do sell HPS (High performance street) and an XPR (Racing) oil that are not API certified, both of which are very good for our cars and have the correct higher amount of ZDDP. Maybe O-Reilly's stocks that too and it's what you buy?
And none of that matters if you've converted to roller cam. Then you can run pretty much any oil you want and be fine.
A couple of years ago I contacted them to ask if they still produced something I could use for a FT cam and lifter setup. I asked for Zinc levels in which products. The info that I got said they still produced the 10-40 and 15-40(only these two weights) with 1300PPM. Within the threshhold needed. So that's what I've been using for about 5 yrs now. So far so good. Cam was already broke in so that may also be why it is lasting. Although I run fairly heavy valve springs(310# over the nose) which dose not lend itself to cam and lifter longevity either.
