Ok guys, my 69 bird has a recently rebuilt m21 with a hurst comp plus shifter. Any time i shift into reverse.....l have to struggle shifting back and forth in 1 to 2 or 3 to 4 before the car will fully disengage from reverse. It is like it get stuck in between reverse and forward gears.....i am assuming it is in shifter. It did same thing before trans rebuild.....other the sitting still for 10 sec shifting up an down everything works very well.. Ideas.....?
My shifter would get stuck in between gears every once in a while when going from 1st to 2nd. I finally decided I needed to do something about it so I pulled the shifter and took it apart. You cannot believe how much crud was jammed up inside that thing. Took it all apart cleaned and regreased everything. Reinstalled and set the alignment. Haven't had anymore trouble since. Best of all it only cost me a day in the garage. Shifts like butter.
Mine is completely clean and greased.....i did that while the tranny was out...i do think your right about just getting under there and checking it out......i may get wife to shift gears and see what happens or is not happening....
What was happening with mine was because it was sooo grungy that occasionally when I shifter, one of the arms was supposed to move and because there was so much resistence, and rub, that the arm next to it would move as well when it wasn't supposed to there by throw it into some in between gear. It actually would still be in first gear but I couldn't get the shifter unlocked. I would have to crawl under the car and manually move one of the shifter rods back into place, then it was good again till the next time.
Adjust it on the car!!! Make sure you pin it. Then adjust the rods so there is no force on each rod as you adjust it.Very light on the snugging of the lock nuts.. Some times just the hanging of the rods puts force on the linkage...may take a bit it will work out!!!
