I pulled my chrome trim rings off and found numbers on my wheels. Does anyone know how to decode them?
I had two different codes.
(1) M5 3 24 KX
(3) M5 8 45 KM

Wheel codes are the two digits on the outside of the rim next to the valve stem hole.
Should be JA or JC for '68. (one for drum, one for disc, but I don't remember which goes which way right now)
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. Yep either JAs or JCs or at least that is the way for 1967s. I have heard JCs were used for all 1968s but haven't been able to verify.

I looked last night the two wheels I just refinished.
YOU MIGHT BE LOOKING AT THE WRONG CODES. Those look like later wheel codes next to the valve stem opening. The ones I have in that location are "HP" which is a Honeycomb wheel code.
The codes for your wheels may be stamped on the inside of the wheel on the backside of the front face. It is after the size of the wheel in inches. Mine say "15 x 7 JJ" which is a proper code for 15 x 7 rims with a 4.75 inch bolt pattern.

Well some more information on my four wheels.
(1) M5 3 24 KX (3) M5 8 45 KM
I thought I may at least use these for a while till I ran across some correct JC wheels however I have found out the 68 trim ring does not fit correctly with these wheels. The rim off sets are different and the inside trim ring edge does not set flush with the rim. It is about 1/2 - 1" off and looks terrible
I ended up having to find a set of JC wheels because these won't work.

I got the rally II JC wheels in the mail today. The paint and color turned out pretty correct I thought. Here are some images: http://www.firebird400ho.com/?p=1282

Harold,
Your wheels turn out awesome!
I have 2 sets of rims. My JC's don't seem to have any other coding on them by the valve stem. Any idea why?

Early 68 to about mid year only JC by the valve steam and the date is inside the rim where the tire seats. You can see that in some of my pics. Later 68 and 69 the date is next to the valve stem. Here is a good article. http://www.wallaceracing.com/rally-wheel-date-code.htm

Harold sold his '68 Firebird and I don't know if and how often he checks back here. This may help you: http://www.wallaceracing.com/rally-wheel-date-code.htm

Thanks Jimc2002. cant find anything about the D with 1 or 7 stamped in it and don't want to take tires off just yet . Wallace says the dates and other stampings are on the inside wondering if the inside means back of wheel or under the tire or they were made in late 67 and had no other stamping . I just hope I didn't pay good money for reproduction wheels..

99% sure they are under the tire, if that is what you are asking.

My sept. 67 build 68 JC ralleys had the dates under the tire. There was a switch from them being on the outside surface of the rim to under the tire but I can't remember the cutoff dates.

That sounds right. I seem to remember the later JCs had smaller text size and additional markings. The 67 and 68 varieties had a simple larger text JC near the valve stem.
