Trying to track down what the correct fan is for my 69 rag top with a 350 non a/c with the turbo 350 automatic.I have added the Vintage Air system and added a factory 19" 7 blade used clutch fan that blew up Monday. Was this fan to large for my 350,should I have used a 17 1/2" clutch fan?Inside shroud is 21".Trying to figure out why it blew up before restarting the engine.Engine mounts good, fan clutch good, has the 2 1/2" spacer appeared to sit well inside the shroud.Comments needed Please and Thanks.

Were all the blades still attached to the fan? You said the WP was wobbly now. That may have done it right there. If the fan moved to one side or the other enough because of the WP bearing being shot it could make contact with the shroud and all hell started breaking loose.

There were a few fan combo's for 69 firebird's, I located this off the site: thefirstgensite.com/library.

#1 7 blade 19" diameter 2-1/2" pitch 69 V8 HD GM# 9796135

#2 7 blade 19-1/2" diameter 2-1/4" pitch Thermo clutch 67-69 firebirds V8 w/AC GM# 9796372
it sounds like you had all the right components were there. some type of failure occurred.
Were the fan blade rivets good?
Are you sure the clutch is good?
What do you mean it blew up, the blades flew off?
Check the site out and it'll help I'm sure.

Two blades had contact nicks on the ends, one of them bent toward the radaitor.Rivets started to pull loose on the blade that bent. The center bracket that holds the shroud is now bent toward the battery. The water pump was new,not sure that was the failure.

The WP would be my guess. I think the original fan for non AC was 19.5"/5 blade non-clutch type on the 350s. Those clutch fans are very heavy though. Lots of weight hanging off the WP shaft.

It sounds as if the fan was out of balance, could be the WP, could be the clutch, but I am sure something was out of balance or the radiator is off center too much, Make sure the engine is center of the shroud?
I believe there were 2 WP's for that year, one standard cooling and one heavy duty cooling.
Was there a vibration?

There was no vibration,it appears the water pump bearing failed on my new water pump.Picking up the new radiator this week and I am realy thinking of installing an electric cooling system.Has any one done this conversion ? What electric fan set up would work best for these cars ?
