I have a 69 that has had an hei installed but the wire was not changed. The distributor has a three wire plug connected to it. One is pink, one blue, and one black. Is the pink one the wire that needs changing?
Rock, The plug with the three wires plugs into the terminals on the side of the cap. Then there's two more terminals labeled Batt and Tach. The batt terminal attaches to the IGN on my switch. This is what I believe to be true although I have not started the car yet so.... we shall see this weekend hopefully.

I replaced the black/purple wire that connects to the coil with some 14g wire. I am getting 12.7 volts at the coil. Have you tested to see how many volts you are getting?
