It looks like the sending unit in my '69s gas tank has decided to give up after only 44 years. I have been able to find a few of them to compare and it looks like Classic Industries has the best price @ $49. Since I have to drop the tank to change the sending unit I'm thinkng that it is probably a good time to also change the 44 year old gas tank (it has a few dents and who knows how much crud in it). The only one I have found so far is at Ames $139 (steel, painted) or $199 (stainless steel). I guess the prices don't seem too bad but, I was wondering if there are any other vendors out there selling tanks that fit our birds. I always like to have a few options to chose from.
There is a seller on epay that makes stainless senders for around $50 and free shipping. I highly reccommend them. NPD sells the tanks as most everyone. All in the $100 to $130 range plus shipping. No need to go stainless unless you want to spend more.

Not sure if you can get firebird tank,The one i got was a canadian made camaro tank.Make sure as you will have to order the gas cap if you get a camaro tank, your original won't fit.
I got mine from my Dynacorn guy when I was ordering a bunch of other stuff. Wasn't that much cheaper but was closer to $100 if I recall correctly.

I bought a gas tank 12 yrs ago for mine, from Classic, no problem with tank or cap fitting
When i got my tank i tried my original cap on it and it didn't fit plus it was not vented, So i had to order the matching vented cap .
my old vented cap worked , but the venting was not very good , worked only one direction..,so I drilled two small holes (1 mm dia) in my cap...opposite sides, one from inside , onre from outs side..made a slight slit in the rubber gasket to 'breathe' without spilling out...

When i had my car out for the first drive this spring and filled her up, I noticed a pressure release when i took off the new vented cap.Thinking i might have to improve the venting,I never had that happen with the original vented tank.
Thanks for all the input. I followed MushroomBurt's advise and called Browns, they had the tank in stock and it will be on my porch tomorrow. Now all I need is the sending unit which I'll probably get from Classic. Thanks Lee.

It is "Browns of Two Rivers, Inc." in Two Rivers WI. (30 minutes S.E. of Green Bay). They deal in Fenders, floor pans, all kinds of sheet metal for a wide variety of makes and models. I just didn't think of them for a gas tank. When it showed up on my porch today, there was a catalog packed in with the tank. I never thought of them for the sending unit but guess what, they have those too. I could have saved the shipping of that if I had only known. You would have thought that Lee (Mushroombert) would have told me that as well.
As for the tank, it looks great but, as others have said, the original cap does not work, needs to be a vented cap since the repop tank doesn't have the vent in the neck like the original.
New tank is in with no major problems. One minor one, the neck has a slightly defferent bend making filling a little more dificult. I was only able to get 17 gal. into a tank listed as 18. The old one was hard to get completly full as well so not a big difference. No rust surprises under the trunk floor, the only rusted area was the locking ring area on the old tank. Surprised at the small amount of dirt that was in the old tank. Got a new vented cap from NAPA for $5.95. Now I'll have to be that guy at shows with the mirrors so you can see the underside (or maybe a 6" lift at the rear shackles). Any way, beautiful day today so I'll have to get some top-down crusing in just to see if the new sending unit really works.
