I am installing the front drum brakes and the self adjuster which my car did not have when I took them apart. I'm finding the top wire of the self adjuster is to long. It seems it was made to go to a top center support and my bird top support is not like that. It is hard to explain but maybe a picture will help.
The top picture is mine and the bottom is a picture of inline tube showing how to install it. See their top post compared to mine. Mine hangs further down making the adjuster wire to long.
Should I cut and rebend or do you have a mother suggestion
flip the wire the other way up so the big end can go over the pin then the white spring hooks on to the hook part way up. there is a sleeve in the kit that aligns the adjuster bar with the hole in the brake shoe where the orange spring is in the other pic. Never modify any of these parts, if they seem wrong get new ones. Your pic looks like you should have. the right stuff though. Keep up the good work, at this rate you should be driving by sept.
Thanks but I do not have any pin up top to connect to like in the 2nd pic. Here is a pic that a member sent and you can see his adjuster wire and his drum spring hooks to the same hook. Looks like I need that size wire but can not find the correct one.
2nd pic I have everything connected but that one adjuster wire.
The 1967 Pontiac Service Manual has a pretty good picture of how everything looks all put back together. Looking at your picture, everything looks right its just that that actuating wire is too long. Strange, did you look at the other side?
Yes the actuating link wire that I have is made to hook at the top like the service manual shows for the rear. My front is just like the 67 service manual shows for the front.
Seems like no one is making the correct link wire for my setup.
If anyone has the correct wire or knows of where I can get it, please let me know.

They must sell it, I had my buddy do my brakes on two cars within the past year and all the hardware matched original. I am sure I have the original springs if you want those.

I've been looking raybestos shows the same part number for 67-68 front and back. H2532 and H2533
The actuating link shows the same in every kit I've seen. If you have yours, I take them unless someone knows another resource to get them.
We just picked ours up at the local auto parts stores. They had them in stock. I'm not sure if it was NAPA or another place. I'll see if I can find out.

Yes, he bought everything at NAPA. He did say that the springs for the rear are longer than the front, so maybe you (or the parts supplier) mixed something up? (Just trying to help here)

Raybestos only shows the one part number and uses both for front and back which is wrong from this setup. I'll check with Napa and see what I can get here but their web site shows the same part used for both front and rear too.
I'll add it to my list, but things are insane around here right now...
Sorry!

Harold it looks like you have rear brake drum hardware there, in your first pic, the blueish actuator rod when it's that long belongs in the rear drum Why are you buying from NAPA? Do you own a Service manual? Here's a pic from thefirstgensite:http://thefirstgensite.com/library/67service/PO67S5.pdf

Yes that is the problem but no one is selling the correct one. The companies that have them listed for the front are using the same part number for the rear. I've checked with ames, year one, npd, firebird central, napa, fisher, Internet.
If someone knows where I can get the part new or used. Please let me know.
You have rear self adjuster hardware, I just sold mine front hardware because I converted to disc. Try Ecklers Firebirds, I think I saw them there. Probably where I bought mine when I replaced them.
did you try Rockauto.com Harold? I will look around and see what I can find too. Try this guy in NY he sells a lot of Camaro/Firebird new and NOS and used parts: http://www.camaros.com/index.php
You know I replaced my hardware back in the 90's, and it probably was the wrong part and could be why my brakes would overheat. Maybe it's time we push for it to be manufactured?
7 years later and this problem continues. I decided to fix my drums because I didn't want to buy new wheels, which I would need to switch to discs. I didn't know fixing the front drums was impossible.
I have a complete set of take off front drum brakes from a '68 from when I switched to disc brakes. Can't give them away. Willing to send you whatever you need for cost of shipping. PM me with email address.
I didn't see your offer in time, and I've ordered a disc brake conversion. Thanks anyway. That's very generous. I'm sure there will be another guy like me coming along some day who needs that part.
Your welcome. Honestly, the 4 wheel drum brakes, even in fine repair, left a lot to be desired. I drove my ‘68 for many years prior to switching. So glad I did.
