i just bought a 1967 firebird for parts, and behold it has a 1968 400 engine and trans. i think, this car was a 326 car i was told, anyway how do i find out if this is a 67 68 69 etc engine.. and a true 400
go to this link as well and it will tell you everythig you need to know and where to find it. Sometimes the engine code and even the casting number will not tell you what you need as there are some casting numbers and and leters that hve been used for multiple years. I had to remove an exhaust manifold recently to determine an engine I had sitting around to find the displacement stamp only to find it was a 350 when other indications pointed to a 400.

Your in luck!! the WT was used in 16 different applications between A, B and F bodies. but never as a 350, however it could be a 389, 400 or a 455 depending on the year and application It was used from 1966 to 1975

You will need the Date code on rear of block, one letter followed by 3 numbers. On pad under distributor. The engine block casting number is a 7 or 6 digit number between firewall and block cast (raised numbers) at a 45 degree angle. It can be seen from top.
The head codes are in the center exhaust ports and the head date codes are exactly like the codes on block (size cast) and may either be on the rail of head or under valve cover depending on the year.

Those are the casting dates of the heads. E018 would be May 1st, 1968.

Ok, these are all the numbers stamp on this engine..front pass. side by water pump..297409 YJ engine block by dist.. 86339 or a 36339 just below M166 and D4N are these numbers any help? exhaust manifold 1/6 I tried to us the web site could not make any headway on year or size of engine.. Thanks Jerry
M166 is a December 16 1966 casting built for a 67 model year. YJ is a 250 HP 326. 9786339 is also a 326 block as cast for 1967. The D4N is the day shift or night shift casting shift. The 16 can be either be 1968 or 1969 big valve #16 heads or 1970 small valve 16 heads. The 400 stamped in heads is correct. They are either 68/69 hipo heads or 70 lopo big car.
