How do I indentify which pertronix kit to buy for a 400? Is there a number to reference on the distrbuter? I believe I read that then it's best to replace the coil as well. I will also do the cap but I assume I still order points style wire set? Any help is appreciated.
Mine is kit number 1181 from pertronix ignitor series for GM vehicles. But, yes everything is the same . you may need a new coil IF your coil has an internal resistor. If not, then the resistor is in the hot wire going to the coil. The conversion needs the full +12 volts not 6volts. so you will have to bypass the resistor in the wire or just replace it with a new plain wire. As for the coil I just added a flame thrower, oem style coil.
The nice thing is it looks stock! I never liked the look of that bulky hi-voltage electronic distributor. it just looks out of place in a classic.
Ditto on that. I have the standard Ignitor with the flamethrower coil (on a Sprint but it really doesn't matter). Plug wires are all stock. It looks very stock and works perfectly. IMHO, the base (e.g. cheapest one) unit is all you need.
Do you recommend a wire set for the 400 with ac? Currently it has the straight boots which don't seem best withy the ac. I prefer not making my own set of wires as the boot can work loose. Maybe a donor year and different make might work better?
No idea. I made mine, the key to making good crimps are take your time and a good vise to hold the crimping die. Once you get the hang of making the crimp its easy. Nothing will look better than a custom set of wires. I went through 3 sets before I got the look I liked..lol Mine are straight plug and held in place with an anodized aluminum wire loom. don't get the cheap tin looms . They will never look good. to me they all seem to have that cheap tin universal fit look. I bought mine from summit racing, they are for the Pontiac V8 and look great!
yes i'm running headers. 15 degree looks good too I just went to look if I still had those. LOL. I just liked the look of the straight boot with a loop of wire going into the loom exactly the same for each plug. The wires are blue to match my car and the loom is anodized blue. it just looks cleaner to me. To each their own.
Think I ended up with a set for a big block ford last year when I bought new ones. Got black with angled gray boots. Just couldn't go the blue ford racing ones though. A couple of them were longer than needed but better longer than too short I always say.
