I need some advice.. I took my 68 to a point judged show and was knocked badly on a item I was told was correct.I have a disc brake car and was told a disc brake car from the factory received a different trim ring then a drum brake car. drum received a part # 9781480 vs. a disc part # 475019.As near as my knowledge this is true but was told by a judge all recieved brushed cause his drum brake car had it.So I am going to a all pontiac show this weekend to get judged should I put the brushed rings on (which to my knowledge is wrong)or keep the polished ones on? The other thing is even though I have the part numbers I cannot approch the judges untill after the show
Intersting. I have NEVER heard of a '68 having polished trim rings. I would think this would show in the dealer brochure.
Anyone have that handy?
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. I too have not heard of polished trim rings on '68 birds. I too have a disc brake car with brushed rings, but they may have been changed out over the years. Would love to see some documentation about this. As an fyi, there is a debate years long about polished vs. brushed trim rings on '70 AAR Cudas. Hope this doesn't turn into that. :-)
From what was explained to me was the brakes back then were asbetos which were highly corrosive the drum kept the dust from getting on the trim ring but the disc (like todays cars)dust would stick to the brushed rings and ruin them so they used the polished trim rings to avoid the corrosion.along with a different rim as I found out there is a different spacing from a drum rim to a disc rim. a disc rim will work on both a drum and disc but a drum rim will not work on a disc because it wont clear the 4 piston caliper.
So as near as I can see I should put the brushed rings on because it seems to be what everyone expects. even if it is wrong.Or am I missunderstanding? Again I can't talk to the judges while they are judging even if I have proof.
To say it is wrong, I'd need a copy of whatever you have been reading. Corrosion should have nothing to do with it as the rings are stainless. You are correct about the rims themselves, but I still have never heard or read the one about the trim rings.

I want to thank all of you for the effort you put in to look this up.I purchased a master parts catalog 1968 and back and indeed it is as gus68 and haroldb point out BRUSHED.Near as I can figure the parts guy I had look up which ring was using a newer master parts catalog. The corrosion issue was the only thing we could come up with of why it specified drum or disc. The master parts catalog did specify drum or disc.and listed each accordingly. So I admit I was wrong!!but as least it was based on misled information...So the car now has the correct BRUSHED trim rings on.
We should move this thread to the FAQ's area so it is archived.
Thanks for your help with the research!
Bjorn??

Glad it all worked out for you. What would the judges do in a case where you had put on factory disc brakes on the car but it did not originally come with them? I'm thinking of installing additional STOCK options on my car, like factory tilt. Would they deduct points?

They should not deduct points because they would not know how the car was built. They do not compare to PHS or anything like that. So as long as they don't overhear the Owner talking about all the 'upgrades' they did, it should be no-harm-no-foul as long as it is correct and stock.
