Painting will depend on MANY factors. How much additional body work is required? How good of a repaint was the last one? What was the prep before the last one? (sand or blast to bare metal, light sand and paint, slap bondo and paint)?
I think you can still get some cheapo paint jobs for under $1000, but quality will go up from there. A full panel - door removal with realignment / jamb prep, etc can approach ten grand.
I'd say if the paint job is in realitively good shape and is not hiding tons of inadequate body work, you may be better off leaving well alone.
Or wait until the rust through creeps up and then do a full resto in the correct color at that time.
Keep in mind that many of these car repairs start out as "I'll just do this one thing". Next thing you know, half the car is taken apart and you feel so overwhelmed that it sits like that for 8-10 years until you sell it for half what you paid.
Post some pictures if you would like some further comments.

I have a 15 footer as my daily driver. It all just depends on what you want it for. My nicer 'bird mostly only goes to shows. I'm too concerned about some idiot backing into me or pulling out in front of me. I'm not as concerned about that with my dd. If you want a show car, by all means start the resto.
