I took my 68 firebird this morning to have my steering linkage done. On the way to the mechanic, my engine started knocking. Sounded like it is coming from the block. I knew it was going to be something major. It did not sound like it was coming from the head. Fortunately, i made it to the mechanic. He looked at my emgine oil dipstick and saw metal shavings. Bummer! I guess i have no choice but replace the engine. He quoted me for 3k bucks to overhaul my engine. But Im leaning towards buying a rebuilt long block and still have him put it together and install it. Can u guys give me an advice on how to get my car back on the road again. Is there someone selling an angine out here in southern Ca. Im in San Diego. The one. I saw here in craigslist is asking $3900. My mechanic offered to rebuild it for 3K and install. But I do not trust that he would do a good job.
I saw this in craigslist also. I am not an engine specialist, so I really dont know what all this means. I know that these are upgrades though. I really dont need my car to be fast, but this is locally located and it looks good already. What you guys think.
Suggest you find out how familiar your mechanic is with Pontiac engines. There are some very specific building techniques involved with them, especially tricks to improve internal oiling and the modern ways to deal with the rear main seal. You might want to get Jim Hand's/Rocky Rotella's engine book and do some reading.

About two summers ago my 68 350 block cracked. I did some looking around and found an awesome place for a new long block. I went back with the same 350 and it was build to factory specs. The long block cost me $1,500 with $125 shipping. The warranty is the beat I have ever seen, even better then new crate motors. I had a lifter flatten out after a year and they covered parts and labor with no questions, they even helped diagnose the problem with my mechanic. Look up S&S Rebuilt Engines www.rebuiltautoengines.com I can not recommend them enough. They will build what ever you want. No, I don't work for them either.
