Im building a sound system for my 69. I have a numbers matching car in excellent condition with the stock radio still intact. I would like a retro sound shaft style receiver to install and not have to modify the dash in any way but the 69 has a unique radio and there isn't an aftermarket solution at this time to my knowledge. Any of you guys experienced this? What was your solution?
I have the same numbers matching 69 in very good condition with the am radio. I put in a rediRad unit, it goes inline of the coax wire for the ant. It has a 1/4 in. connector the can plug in a ipod or mp3 player. Tune the radio to certain freq. to play your music. I have 12 gig. of music on my phone so lots of tunes. I didn't cut anything up or have wires running front to back, just a + and - for power. Sound old school with the one speaker which is good for me. But others have the hidden radio units with the cd changer or something along those line. Just depends what u want to spend and what kind of sound you're looking for.
Firebird Central is selling a 69 Firebird only matching "modern" radio. It is $600, the difference is that it is not as deep with the case and internals as the old one.
I would check the reviews on the retro sound. Maybe look at the Camaro forum. I don't recall if that radio or another was getting some pretty bad reviews.
converted to PLL AM/FM Stereo with an output power of 45 watts per channel. The only change to the face is a small LED just past the 16 behind the radio dial on the above radio. This LED lights green for FM, yellow when tuned to a stereo FM station and red for AM. You can't see it when the radio is off. This LED will go out when the AUX input is activated too.
I like the idea of leaving the stock AM radio in place. To most thieves they don' to have any value.
