I have been looking for a firebird for years and finally was able to get money together to buy one. I posted a wanted add and found this bird in a barn in Washington. Mayfair maze yellow 68 ram air 1 four speed 3.90 posi rear. Non numbers car. Just thought I would share my find.

Very cool!!! Welcome... These kind of finds are pretty cool- does the previous owner have ANY idea what happened to the original motor? I think I would exhaust that till I ran into complete dead ends everywhere.. It would be so much easier if you bought it local to where you live.

I take it you ran PHS documents on it to verify it's pedigree. The reason I ask is that I can see it's missing even some basic 400 Sport model items.

Ya the car came with phs document and the car was repainted in the 70s AMD had a 71 400 installed. It hadnt been registered since 1986. The previous owner passed away so I dont know where I can go passed that. The motor is long gone.I will just have to build the one I got.

The car may also have been damaged in the front as the front bumper and RH front grill are not 400 option pieces. Easily rectified.

I am really, really glad the paperwork was part of the deal as missing items like that could be clues to a possible tall tale.

Just for fun you could go on a long quest to slowly acquire the RA engine block and heads and eventually assembly your own. We have a couple of "super" members that sorta specialize in rare models like yours and do collect the special parts for them. Banshee for instance.

Are the upper and lower Ram Air pans and unique air cleaner still there? Definitely include more photos as we eat up rare vehicles like this.

Got yourself a nice find! Good for you. We will help you with your restoration just ask lots of questions. We used to visit Whitefish a lot to go skiing.

Unfortunately the owner before the one i bought it from had started to tear it down to do body work. He passed away and his son kept some of the parts cause he wanted the car anD wasn't happy his mom sold it. I do not have any of the ram air pan stuff or the hood each it came with. I am going to restore to the best of my ability but I dont want to do the original color cause I dont like the yellow. I will try to do my best to build it right but as I just found out I having my first kid It will probably be a long build.

FYI, that 3.90 rear end is worth $2500+. I know, I sold mine.

Good advice and, in fact, I would verify that rear end after the VIN's You will be looking for a "UX" code.

There is a "hidden" partial VIN number below the louvered cowl on the passenger side.

Yes, under the cowl, on passenger side kinda directly over the heater coil cover on the firewall on the raised ledge between the space where the wiper transmission lies (the kickpanel air intake area) and the firewall.

I will have to wash the car under the cowl is caked with dirt

I went and cleaned it off and the partial matches the vin yay

Are manual disc brakes a common option on the fgf

Yes, especially cars more purchased for racing. But very easy to install a booster for PB.

I hadn't ever heard of them till I got to talking to the guy I bought my car from. It has the manual disc

No fear, mine started out looking near like that! Best put the booster on as well, much nicer to come to those fast stops!

Makes sense:

Disc = better stopping power and reduced brake fade

Lack of a booster due to low engine vacuum on a hi-po motor (after shop mods for racing)

I have the same set up on mine- I will definitely be putting a booster on- live in a college town and use the brakes ALL the time in a moments notice.

I'm curious, are the hidden partial VINs on just 68's or would they be on a 67 as well? And were they only on certain cars?

Every single FGF ('67-69). There was an extremely informative post by Amervo on this subject within the past couple of weeks.

I looked at the phs documentation and it said that the code on the axle is a zp axle code. The axle in my car has that code. Hope this is correct

I can only go with what's on this chart:

67-69 Axle Charts

This is where I got the "UX" code from. Note that only in '69 were "Z" codes used for posi's, and there is no "ZP" even in '69

Then you have this set of codes which lines up with your axle but not my '67 3.55 4-pinion that indeed had a "UW" code on it:

I found that your chart matches up with the one in the '68 Service Manual for Firebirds - with one exception for the 3.55 non-posi. Your chart says XN, while the Service Manual says XH.

That combined chart off of the First Gen Site is incorrect.

Your ZP code is the correct code. I have the same axle in my car.

Plus my car cover has about six inches of snow on it
