Is anyone familiar with the problems that come up doing this change-out? Had this 69 since 79 and a tilt wheel would be nice!! Car is console shift 400 trannyw/350 stocker.
Hey Frank. I've never done the switch, so I can't help you there.
Do you have a tilt column already though? I have one for a column-shift with a key that I won't use. It's either a GTO or Firebird column. I'm not sure if they're the same.

On a '69 you will need a new ignition switch as well. The operation of the switch changes from push to pull (if that makes any sense). The old switch can be modified IIRC but requires taking the switch apart and changing the mounting bracket from one side of the switch to the other. Also, the Firebird and Camaro switches are not interchangeable. Other than that pretty easy swap.
Thanks for the info guys, I have a rebuilt column with Firebird ignition switch. Needs to go to paint shop for correct color etc, using my old neut switch, with some misc new parts. Right about interchange on Camaro switches. Must be Pontiac. This is gona take a few days for me alone in my garage. Each time I do one of these deals I swear off workin on cars!! Last project was rear window de-fogger. Was a snap until the factory switch installation!! I'll keep ya posted on my success or whatever! Tnks, Frank
Had mine out and back in in one day easy until I tried to connect the switch, that is how I found out about the switch differences. Good luck, it is really a good up-grade.
Hey Guys, Have the tilt installed under hood part, now for the under dash part... Have reversed the plugs to the ign switch and pluged them in. Can get car to start sometime but not every time. Have issues with signal lights. Pluged them in and right sig lite works but no left. Have a adapt harness between the sig switch and the car harness that was taped heavy when I removed it. My supplier says the column is setup to eliminatae the adeptor harness. Have pluged it in and Nothing! Does the ignition switch feed the signal lites, horn, flashers? The ign switch may be bad as its not new. Any ideas guys? It does start and run when I juggle the ign switch most of the time! Tks for your help and comments..Frank Woodard
Need help with my tilt change! Have it instaled, everything works, signal lites, etc but when you turn the key to on the dash lights (gen and temp) come on but when you turn to starter, nothing!!! I have no test equipment so I am going to trailer car to shop when the weather allows. Its got me, everything seems to be ok but won't crank. Have a new ign switch and neut safety switch. Back up light work so i think those components are OK. I have tapped on the starter and solenoid and nothing. (this used to work on some older cars) There is a mystery wire tapped into the yellow wire on ign switch harness. It goes out under the hood somewhere?? Would appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thanks, Frank
Hi All, Just to update you on the tilt changout. Its all done and complete now. Big problem was in the wire harness under the dash. The plug-ins must be reversed for the Tilt set up. After all hooked up couldn't get her to start. Hauled it to the shop and tech found one of the wires in the harness had separated.. thus the start problem.. He repaired wire and she goes fine now. Tilt is wonderful. GM should have made it standard on all Firebirds.. Am thinking about my next project for next winter. May up grade the tranny. She turns appx 3500 RPM at 65 and I have heard you should be able to drop this to 2100.. What is the best way to go on this swap? I will have pros do this not at home in my garage. Have a price of appx $1300 del to my door for a 200 4r over drive w/converter and everything but the shifter upgrade. Will need to contract trans installer for installation. Good Luck and thanks for your help and advice. Frank
