Hey everybody, I just replaced by dash bezel and in the process I had to also replace the printed circuit on the back of the instrument cluster. A friend of mine ended up disconnecting the cluster while troubleshooting it and I didn't see exactly how he did it. To make a long story short, I replaced the printed circuit - turning signals, etc all work, but found out my gas gauge does not after getting the bezel back on. Did I miss a connection on the cluster that he pulled off? Thanks!
Thanks guys, the only thing I can think of is that I did not tighten down the nuts on the studs. There isn`t anything that hooks to those studs, right? Otherwise where does the signal come from?
That is correct. The circuit board has the build in signal that is why it need a good connection there. There should be a couple long 1" or so nut that gets screwed on first under the board and the flat nuts and washer that holds the circuit board tight against them to make a good connection.
I tried pulling the gauge cluster out of the dash last night, but the speedo cable speedo cable seems to be stopping me from pulling the plastic panel out. How do I unscrew the cable. My hand would not fit under the gauge cluster. I have already unscrewed the fasteners off the plastic panel, removed the 3 bolts that hold the steering column up. Do I have to remove the vent duct to depopulate the underside of gauge cluster to get my hand in there? Is there a trick to this? My ultimate goal was to change instrument bulbs and check for ground connections.
On my 69, the speedo cable just has a clip that holds it on. Once you pop the clip, it pulls straight off. Good luck, I am having issues with this stage.
before pulling the cluster out, Just reach underneath the dash up behind the cluster and unscrew the speedo cable.
I also can pull the cluster out and the left side pull further out and I can reach in from the left side and behind the cluster. Just depends how tight everything is.
Ok thanks. But I will go ahead and remove the ducting for the driverside vent. I think this is the only way to reach into the pop up clip. I'll let you guys know the outcome. Thanks again.
Good luck. I had to remove the whole dash bezel for what I am doing. What a pain. The worst part is getting the stem for the lights out (and getting it back on). This is round #2 for taking off the bezel on this go-round.
Any tips on getting the nut back on before putting the stem back in would be appreciated. It took 45 minutes and a lot of swearing the last time.
I found the best way to trouble shoot the dash bezel is with the schematic in front of me along with a 9 volt battery, a bunch of alligator clips and a 90 ohm Potentiometer.
I had painted my gauge cluster and nothing would ground correctly. Had to do a bunch of scraping and then it worked like a charm.
Please note: Do not to put voltage across the current gauge. It will peg hard and smoke will come out:)
I added an extra ground wire to my cluster and solved several issue. One the gas gauge would barely rise above empty with a full tank and second with the headlights on, both signal indicators would flash if you turn either one on.
