I am looking for some help with swapping my TH350 for a 5 speed. I'm not sure which transmissions can be fitted to the Ponch motors, but there are a ton of Ford (mainly Mustang) Tremec 5 speeds available, but I'm curious if they will work with a Ponch bellhousing conversion. Any advise if appreciated as well as tips on 5 speeds for sale in the southern CA area. Thanks
You will most likely have to change your crossmember. I don't know if the stock manual one will work or you have to buy or make a custom one. The Tremec 5 speed bolted right up to my Pontiac manual transmission bellhousing. If you're starting with an automatic you may want to go with a hydraulic throw-out rather than try to piece up the Z bar and rods.
Not sure which way I plan to go right now, just asking questions. That's good to know I can use a stock bellhousing. Do you know if a Ford Tremec will bolt up? What TREMEC are you using?
If you aren't into burn-outs and power shifting you can use a t-5 transmission out of a third gen F-body. The better ones are good for more than 300 ft/pounds of torque. I installed a world class t-5 in my '69 about 5 years ago and have been very happy with it. Best part is that good used ones can be found for less than $500. Requires shortening the driveshaft and moving the console back 2.5". Original 350 crossmember can be modified to work.
If you've got the funds, google Kiesler. They sell Tremec TKO kits that will have everything you need to swap an auto to a 5 speed including bell housing, pedals and linkage, driveshaft, cross member, etc. 4K range, if I remember correctly.
Mine is a TKO 600, supposed to be rated to 600 foot pounds, I hope so as my engine is just about that. Don't think I could ever get traction to really test it though. I bought mine from Kiesler, after dealing with their customer service I'm not surprised at the bankruptcy. Try Modern Driveline, Bruce deals with Ford mostly but will help you with any make. He helped me after failed attempts to get help from Keisler.
