Hey guys I need your advice and some schooling from your knowledge and experience. This is my first pontiac V8 build (1974) and I'm sure there's post's and books & manuals on this info but I rather just get it straight from you guys. I need some new parts. 1. new timing chain cover (ebay aftermarket OK?? do they fit??) 2. new valve covers- Do I need to run the oil drippers?? engine core didnt have valve covers? 3. new oil pan- Do I need to run a windage tray?? dropped pan and engine core didnt have one. Thanks. Weekend street car, at least 1 burnout each time its out, occasional pass at track. No road race?.
74 block should have the 11 bolt timing cover. 68 and older had the 8 bolt. I have the oil drippers but my block came with them. I don't believe 74 block had them? My 68 did not have the windage tray but not sure about the newer blocks?
Speaking of oil pans and windage trays. Make sure your dip stick is compatible or get the right one. There are different varieties depending on year.
1) haven't heard anyone refer to the fit of a aftermarket timing cover so chances are they fit ok. Somebody would be bitching about it if they didn't. Why not buy an orig one and not have to worry. 2) No. You do not need them unless your valve covers don't have a baffle for the breather tube. 3) I think they stopped using windage trays when they went to a baffled oil pan. Anyway, if your main caps are not drilled for it you can't put a factory one on.
