Went to a paint shop today to have some Argent Silver and Charcoal Gray mixed along with the Dove Grey for the back side. They guy tells me PPG doesn't have a single stage Charcoal Gray? Huh? You have the Argent Silver and the Gray in single stage? Guy tells me the Charcoal is supposed to be clear coated?
I was planning to shoot the paint rather than use the spray cans to get a better cure on the wheels.
What is everyone doing with Rally II's. Is everyone clear coating the wheels? I thought they were supposed to not be glossy? Any Ideas? Thanks.
Thanks Geoff I did have that. The CarQuest Paint mixing shop tells me they don't have the Charcoal in a single stage, and then when asking about Clear coats, they don't have a Clear that is a matte finish. I am still puzzled by that.
I'm beginning to think they don't know what they are talking about.
Harold I do not remember the post you had about the wheels. Did you use the templates they sell? Who's clear coat did you use? What would you have done different?
For me I am looking to use a friends blast booth or just shoot them outside with sand. Then rattle can spray them with Eastwood's paints and then clear. Eastwood has two different clears both of which I have at the moment to try.
Yes we used the templates. I don't know of anything I would do different. We used a spray gun for the silver and the clear. My uncle had some argent silver already so we just used it. We used Eastwoods spray bomb charcoal grey.
It was just something I choose to do out of ease. After painting the silver and masking it off with the templates, it was just easier to paint the rest of the wheel with the charcoal. It won't be seen after I put the trim rings on so I did not think it matters.
I did not paint the back or the inside of the rim with the correct dove grey either, I just used the charcoal on it too.
Thanks for the close up Jim. The paint shop I was talking with was in Libertyville.
I figure the masks are just a starting point. The paint shop did contact PPG and they can get the single stage Charcoal Grey. Still not sure why he cannot get a matte finish clear, but I think the single stage won't need it.
