I've searched here for a few days now and know the answer is here somewhere but have not really nailed down ALL of my options on a rear end swap. It sounds like the 2nd Gen is the best option, but what are my other options if I can't find a 2nd Gen? It would be great to find a Posi with the optimum gears, but not a necessity, just looking for something other than 2nd Gen that can be slightly modified to fit my 68. Nova maybe? Anything BOP?
I would change the gears and insert a Posi unit, but rust has got the best of mine.
Jim at jdrace can give you every combination that would work in your car. He made a post in the parts for sale forum and his user name is Monza and contact info it listed. His website is jdrace.com Here is the post https://firstgenfirebird.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=279541#Post279541 He has helped a a few here including myself and he knows his stuff on rear ends and is most helpful!
Here is a portion of it. "68-79 Nova rear could be any of the following: 8.2, 8.5, 7.5 or 12 bolt. 68-71 were 8.2 or 12 bolt 72-74 were 8.5 75-79 were 7.5 or 8.5
Nova rearends are the widely proclaimed to be the"bolt-in" swap for 1st gens. However some Pontiac Ventura, Buick Apollo & Skylark and Oldsmobile Omegas and 77-79 Cadillac Seville also got the 8.5."
Mine is a 74. 8.5. Count on having to change your axles as well. In my experience they are usually worn at the bearing because the serve as the inner race.
