Hey, is there a Pontiac engine specific website out there somewhere? I need to start looking for a 400 to replace the chebbie 427 in my '68 400 4sp 'Bird, but I don't know what to look for as far as casting numbers, blocks, cranks, etc. Also not sure if I want to try to find something original or go with a stroked 455 and aluminum heads, etc. Anyway, I figure there HAS to be a Pontiac engine site out there somewhere where I could learn this info. Any clues?
In addition to the two-letter code, you also need the year of the block to be absolutely sure what you are looking at.
If you're looking at a motor in a junk yard - and you want a 455 - Pontiac made it easy and they put the number "455" on the outside of the block, just forward of the left (driver's) side motor mount.
By the distributor is the date the motor was cast (date code). That, along with the casting number (behind the passenger side head ) and th block code on the front will determine the year, size and FACTORY rated HP of the motor.
The date code is usually 4 characters - a letter and three numbers. The letter corresponds to the month, the next two numbers the day and the last number is the year (Where "9" = 1969 or 1979)
