Hi All, I have been suffering from a squeeling fan belt on a 326. I have bought this car second hand so don't know if it was the stock alternator, but since have changed out for a new one and a new belt. The alignment of the belt always looked to be out on both alternators so I modified the new alternator to line up a bit closer but still get chirping on start up and hard acceleration. Any thoughts?
Sometimes new belts need to break in before they stop making noise. If it's broke in and tight enough you could look around for some belt dressing at the parts store. i have one that chrps when i blip the throttle as well. I haven't addressed it yet. Let me know if you get it figured out.
If your alignment is/was off address that first. How have the brackets deviated from stock?
Another possibility is:
Look and see and if you have two different size groves in the Crank and WP pulley and if both of your belts have number starting in 15xx. Long post a while back on the PY site about this.
Use to be that there were a 1/2 and I think 3/8 belts but now there are only metric 15mm belts that fall in between. The problem is that the belts sits at different hights on the pulleys and thus rotate at different speeds and then squeals. Gates sells the correct sizes at Grainger but I keep throwing the alt belt. The better solution is to get the larger grove belt in a 17mm size. My brother has done this with his cars and works great.
Another thing to do is take a look on Vikki's site for all the correct belt sizes and orientation. I had similar issues on my Sprint before I replaced my belts with the correct ones. Typically we pull the old and buy a new one based on that size, even if it is wrong. There is a wealth of reference material over there.
Same problem, I realigned the alternator and the power steering but they still squealed. I took off all the pulleys, the water pump and the crank were both bent. I straightened both and the squeal diminished but I still get the same as you. I put on a thicker power steering belt and that stopped some but still a little left on the alternator especially when the fans are on and I mat it.
