Question for the numbers gurus! My 1968 bird 400 has a body tag build date of 12D67 ( 4WEEK OF DECEMBER 1967) Assembly date invoice is Jan 3rd 1968
The correct carburettor for my vehicle would normally be -automatic-Turbo H-M- Rochester 4bbl- #7028264 (1968) However my vehicle was built in December 1967- therefore being an early built 68 bird- quadrajets didn't have a number stamped on the float bowl. So a carburettor with the stamped number of #7028264 wouldn't be correct- unless of course it had a date code of December 67 stamped on it. Can a carburettor #.#7028264 have a date code of 67 stamped on it? I am under the impression that stamping of the float bowls only commenced in late 68? And that earlier quadrajets had the round id tag (circle)?? Would the carb I need (so as to be date code correct) need to be a 1967 quadrajet? a 1967 carter quadrajet? or can it in fact be the 1968 listed carburetor #7028264 ?
Bit confusing- my apologies- basically- what carburettor would of been on my bird- bearing in mind it was built in the 4 week of 1967? Remembering its a 1968 bird. What I mean exactly is that should it be a quadrajet with numbers stamped on the float bowl? or should it be a carter quadrajet with numbers on the round id tag? I understand that if it was a carter built quadrajet- then its number should be (4 numbers) - xxxxs? This number would be equivalent to the # 7028264 for the exactly same carburettor- (only difference is the number) same carburettor but just different number?
I am a bit puzzled on this one! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Banshee. Thanks for your input Ok from what your saying- the correct carb for me would be #7028264 (1968 carb model # code) And with a base plate date code of say in between 3048 TO 3478 approximately. (car has build date of 4 week in Dec 1967) Is that how I am suppose to read it?????? So you can have a #7028264 (1968 code) model carb with a 1967 date code (base plate) ????
Actually your date code would be 3047 to 3487 since it was built 12D67. Yes you will have a 68 model carb with #7028264 code and 3047 to 3487 date plate.
My latest '68 project was built around July 11, 1968. I'm thinking there could not be too many after that...

Ok...I should have said...production typically ends/ended in late June. BUT being the Firebird did not start production until late December 1966...unlike the 67 Camaro which started tooling up in May of 66. The 67 Firebird was a mid year release. I guess I need to use words like usually, typically, generally instead of definitive when commenting. My June reference was a generalization and a reference and in no way has bearing on his question.

My 12 D chassis built, December 31st invoiced 68 HO 7028271 carb has a baseplate of 3517. With the exception of how late year Muncie main cases are stamped...everything else is straightforward.
General rule of thumb between chassis build..drive train and invoice with regards to late calendar model year builds. 2 to 4 weeks is general rule for 68. So...with a 01 B chassis build...you could have part dates 2 to 4 weeks preceeding chassis build. Exceptions are Ram Air specific heads (#31) ram air specific carbs and long branch manifolds

Banshee, Harold ,68PLS400 - your input and knowledge is much appreciated. You dudes Rock!
Harold I saw your web site- what an incredible detailed performance on your Bird- the photos are excellent- I have saved quite a number of them for referencing purposes. Banshee- my 400 was actually bought new from a dealer in Michigan in 1968- ! I am going to say it- but some of you should get together and write the book " the best informative resto guide on firstgen birds"- I will buy the first copy- signed of course! Keep up the good work gentleman.!
Some of us..plus some not on this board are working on a book per se. The books currently available for purchase that detail 67-69 Firebirds have so many errors that I literally put it down after finding and highlighting 86 errors and another 15 to 20 in the Firebird Red book.
Anyone can slap information together, find a publisher and charge $20-30.
As they say...measure twice...cut once.

Hell...its more of a compiled database from 25 years of playing with these cars.
A lot of the information is already here on this site..and if it isn't contained within this forum, ask. More than likely someone here knows the answer.
If we do release the info...it'd likely be in CD format.
