Hey all two quick questions: 1. Where would i be able to get the key that locks the cam gear to the cam? i lost mine and am not sure where i can pick one up.
2. When lining up the timing marks or dots on the timing gears for my 400 pontiac motor, are the notches on the crank gear and cam gear supposed to be both at the top, cam gear at the bottom and crank gear at the top, or cam gear at the bottom and crank gear at the bottom?
hey nick look for that key way at the local parts house ( napa, autozone, abc )or speed shops and some engine rebuilder will sometimes hook ya up for a buck or two. the speed shops my not have it listed for the older pontiac motors...but some chevy - v6 use the same size. (excuse the bad word ^^^^)
timing marks for the pont. should be cam dot at the bottom ( 6 o'clock ) and crank dot at the top ( 12 o'clock ). i saying all this for the 350 to 455 if its a 6 cyl then i have not a clue and your are back where you started.
Your cam rotates twice per crank rotation. Don't worry if your cam gear mark is at 12:00 and the crank at 12:00. Simply rotate your motor one revolution. That'll get the two timing marks facing each other at 6 (cam) and 12 (crank). That making it a lot easier to ensure that your chain isn't a tooth off.
Are you talking about the woodfuff key? The hodgemoe that sits in the cam's slotted area?
Sometimes things like that can be hard to find: NAPA has gone to hell in the last few decades, becoming just another parts house with flunkie employees.
If you cannot find one, I have a complete assortment of woodruff keys. The problem, however is that there are quite a few different sizes. My guess is that my kit has about 9 sizes that look as if they would right.
Thanks a lot guys! i auctually found my old cam today and realized it still had to keyway in it, didnt think i still had the cam but i guess i do, well anyways i have it all in and installed now, thanks for the input it helped out lots!! Nick
