what color is the underneath of the car supose to be? and where is the division of black firewall and color supose to be? my car is same color outside and underneath but some people say it supose to be black...i dont think it was painted under there and is original...
mine has firewall black wrapping just around the bottom of the cowl onto the floorpan. It's an irregular spray line. The rest is yellow, but undercoated.

cars supposedly came w/o undercoating from factory...undercoating was added, underside was body color pretty much thru out...but I ve heard different stories on amt of 'coverage' under from different factories , supposedly not the same... mine is all black under ,since I decided to add in missing undercoating...my car came from Wisconsin originnally , maybe they got more u-coating by dealers up north??
You're right Bjorn. Dealerships shipped most cars out to Ziebart for undercoating. There were a few other joints used up here, but most hit the car pretty hard due the salt dumped on our roads during winter months.
See ... way up north here we put our sound deadener on the OUTSIDE of the body!
the reason i ask is a bodyshop owner said that they came black underneath and all his birds have always been black underneath...but i told him maybe be cause his cars are from the midwest and up north like the norwood plant...mine came from the west coast so maybe because of the differnt plants maybe they are different slightly. such as underbody color..i was like i dont think someone took out the gastank and suspension just to make it look good underneath.
From responses over the years to different forum, it appears that 1st Gens varied from the basecoat black underneath with some light body color overspray at the rockers and trunk area to overspray so heavy that the undercarriage appears to be painted. My '68 was body color on the entire floor pan area, frame rails, trunk area, etc. with very light overspray fading to the black up in the driveshaft tunnel, lower firewall (at the turn upward) and upper rear seat recessed area. It has been reported that the automated factory paint spraying was supplemented by a manual process in areas not hit by machines so there could be variations by the painters.
