Restoration of my 68 vert is in progress and I'm going to need a new top. The body will be painted as original - Solar Red. The original top is ivory / white as is the interior (Pearl Parchment), with console and black carpet. I'm seriously considering replacing it with a black top, as I think that is a more aggressive look with the red. I do not intend to change the interior, for budgetary reasons and I like the red / white look when the top is lowered. If I changed to a black top, I would continue to use the white (pearl) boot, so that it looks uniform with the interior when the top is down. Oh yeah, Rally II's with redline F70-14's will complete the look.
Am I bending any so-called, cardinal rules? Anyone have a similar setup? Would appreciate any comments / opinions.
It should look good. It might not be "as built" but is "correct" for what was orderable from the factory. That's not much different than my Solar Red '68 with red interior (and boot) with a black top.
(However, if you have AC and plan to drive with the top up and AC on in hot weather, the black top will heat up the car and make the AC less effective.)
From a cleaning standpoint, white tops are a PITA!!
My black one always looks black with minimal effort.
My white one however, needs to be cleaned weekly. And if you let it go too long between cleanings, its REALLY hard to get it clean!
And I agree the black top looks more manly.

Those were my thoughts exactly 68tpls. If you ever lower a white top without it being completely clean, you will have dirt crease lines that you will need to scrub the next time.
My car came from previous ownere with blk interior and "semi" white top (slightly ripped) .....I installed a black top as the white is impossible to keep nice....besides ,if you are like I am, you will probably only have the top up when weather is bad anyway , LOL
