Does any one know the correct casting code for a 68 400 HO? I found #9779495 and a #9779494. Would thes be correct for my car?
Harold,
I just took my lbm's off. I have the same lbm's p/n's you have. Cannot find 9779494 as being valid though.
Your thoughts?
Did you reuse the originals or buy new ones?
I wonder if the 9494 was a later replacement. I've read that later that the heat riser flapper in the LBM was disconnected during some services because it was not effected. I wonder if the 9494 was a different design or improvement and it may be why the later parts manual has it as a replacement.
Don't really know for sure. Mine was not on the car so I purchased new ones from RARE
BTW, they are called manifolds....not headers....technically speaking.
My 9779495-1 date code I217 is cast with SAMPLE
My 9779494-1 K277 is cast with SAMPLE
For your HO site...why was there such a date code discrepancy between manifold dates and chassis build and engine/head casting dates? The manifolds were cast on a 1 for 7 basis. as in for every 7 days regular non HO manifolds were cast, a one day run of HO/RA manifolds were cast. Why? supply/demand.
Source? I went to the LORDSTOWN plant reunion and talked to men who worked on the line.
I have owned MANY pre 67 long branches without date codes cast SAMPLE.
I have a service bulletin that the 1607 casting with a heat riser was used to replace the 9494 casting for pre heating issues.
It would be responsible when you post info...to quote your sources.
I see you are doing a lot of fishing on many Pontiac boards for your HO site. John Schuh (Framair) did that on this site many moons ago fishing for Ram Air, Ram Air I and Ram Air II info and VIN's...and disappeared. If you are going to use other peoples sources and info..either credit them appropriately or dont publicly post it. From Jim Mattison himself to me..I asked about the Ram Air Registry...VIN, cowl tag data, options...
His reply?
Immoral purposes.
I understand the wealth of knowledge does us all good... Many others on many other sites have provided the info you sought (UQ radiator specifically)
In essence...give credit where credit due.
As you can see from the link below....what happened to the registry?
Just as every 1967-1968 Firebird restoration guide out there regurgitates [censored].... buying a lab coat, stethoscope, and a Mercedes doesn't make me a doctor.

Great information. I thought I had read something about a bulletin about the change and the heat riser issue.
