Well, the original 4 drum master cylinder is not working. I ordered a reman. from Oriely's and it has a bolt holding down the top, ugly. I know its only for a drum car, but I would like it to look somewhat original and nice for showing the car as an original, not a $50k show car. Does anyone know or have a pic, of an original 68 firebird 4 drum master cylinder? Does it look like a Camaro one? I thought they would be the same, but O'Reilys PC brought up two different ones. Thanks everyone!
Thanks for the link. That's the one I took. The only difference is the original one has bleeder screws. Does any one know where I can send the master cylinder in and get it rebuilt? Or are there numbers on it to match it as being original? Or I'm I worrying to much on originality on a non important part?
I would rebuild it. It is easy to do. Take it apart and look at the bore and see if it has light pitting or heavy. You can hone some of the pitting out if light. I rebuilt mine and it was my first one I every did. It works great.
I wanted my original after looking at the after market..
Ditto to what Harold said. If your current one is original, rebuild it. Check the numbers first. I thought mine was original and it was not. So buying a rebuilt one was a no brainer. Easy to do. I will warn you the rebuild kits can cost more than a rebuilt one. But if your preserving the numbers, it is worth it.
Hoakie, whats the number on an original one? I haven't got it off yet, but was going to check. Also, where is good place to get rebuilt kit? O'Reily's or Firebird resto. company.?
Has anyone added a power booster to their car? Can this master cylinder be used with a powerbooster? I have a power booster from a prior project, and if not to difficult, thought of adding it on. Thanks!
Mine is power brakes so mine is for power brakes. I think the manual was basically the same but no bleeders. The power drum brake master cylinder was installed at a angle so the bleeders were to help remove air trapped in the bore. Manual master cylinder was installed straight and did not have the bleeders. Or that is what I've read.
My car has the bleeders. The only number I have is on the bottom of the cylinder, not like yours. Yet, it is very similar to yours, if not identical. Can't read the numbers, until it Is off car.
Does anyone know where to get a rebuilt kit?
As for the bleeders, IMO, if from factory the master cylinder had bleeders, and the aftermarket or replacement ones didn't. Reman.s are whatever the company gets back in from exchanges. I bought a reman. starter one time for another vehicle, and it was an original numbers correct starter for a 69Z.
