My clock finally quit working the other day, so now it's time to convert to quartz like I should have done years ago. There seems to be conversion kits on ebay for about $80 but they say they only work with the Borg clock internals. Mine is made by General Time Corporation so won't work with these kits. Has anyone found a quartz movement for these General Time Corp clocks? I don't want to send this out for $200 if there is a conversion available.
I have checked for several years but have not found a replacement/conversion kit.

These things aren't too difficult to repair. I just fixed mine! Here's what you do. 1. Check to make sure the ground wire clip is making good connection and that is not causing the clock to malfunction 2. Take clock out of the housing 2. Bend the little tabs back with needle nose pliers or screwdriver 3. Take clock inside part out of housing 4. Loosen the nut by the wire connector and slide inside portion of clock out 5. Spray down the guts with some contact cleaner 6. Get a flashlight and located the contact points inside the clock 7. Using a small screwdriver open the contact points to were you can inspect them 8. Clean the points using a very small key file (Harbor Freight has the pack of 10 for a couple of $) 9. After both contacts are clean, add a very small strip of 300 or so emery cloth to the file and re-clean the points with emery 10. Clean points with contact cleaner 11. Spray down the guts with mineral, gun or instrument oil 12. Test for a couple of days 13. Install a 2A fuse to the hot wire of the clock, so every time the battery gets weak it will blow the fuse instead of gumming up the points. Now you got an awesome working piece of history! Use instructions at your own risk, of course. Not guaranteed to work, but worked like a charm for me, accuracy is a min a day or better for me.
Hey thanks for this! I gave it a try only to find out one of the thin wires leading from one of the terminals to a coil in the clock had burnt apart. Now I'm searching for a good clock restorer.
Yea, those conversion kits on ebay are misleading. One thing I learned the hard way was to read the fine print carefully and if there is question, ask before buying.
Quick turnaround, reasonably priced, but they are some of the people creating the confusion on eBay. You can probably guess why, their kit will work with the other F-body's in dash clock.
I recall paying about $125 at the time plus shipping kept it under $160 all in.

Thanks for the recommendations. Both gave me a quote. I'll be trying Instrument services Inc. They were a hundred bucks less and only two week turnaround. This price includes installing the quartz movement, cleaning up the case, buffing the lens, polishing the bezel and repainting the hands. Will follow up with pictures and quality once I get it back.

Update... received the clock back in two weeks just as they promised. Tested it to the battery as they instruct before installing and all worked fine. Installed it yesterday and it's working great. Keeps perfect time so far. Much better than the old clock that was off by 10 min a day. Clock looks the same and the only differences are: 1. Second hand now sweeps rather than tick 2. To set the time you turn the knob counterclockwise rather than clockwise. I'm told this has to do with an added gear to the quartz assembly.
For $150 shipped I'm very happy, they did a good job!

Anyone know where I can get a knob to fit the clock? Mine was missing before I sent it to have the quartz movement put in. I can live without a knob but it does finish off the look.

That's awesome since mine has needed to be done for some time. Mine actually worked up until about four or five years ago. I looked through their website and found it interesting that they do not offer the original movement restoration for the Firebird though?
There are a bunch on eBay, search 68 firebird clock
Thanks! I got one today, should be here soon.
