I would never want to own a car with that many new panels on it. Buy one with less rust and repair the originals.

Survivor? With all that new metal I'm not quite sure you could say it survived.

Wow. Pretty sweet car once it is finished. Is there anything special about getting a replacement windshield? I assume a special order from a classic car supplier. Does it look like he has smaller tires or is this thing raised? He is so close, seems odd to part with it now. a 400HO is pretty desirable. Too bad it isn't a convertible or I'd be very interested.

Oh, I found out it isn't a numbers matching. He mentioned that one can order a block and have it stamped to make "numbers matching". wow. I wonder how many people do that to call a car numbers matching. Is that a common practice? How can one tell if someone did that? probably no way to tell.

There are ways to tell, you just need to know what to look for.

Casting numbers and date codes don't lie unless they are faked too

You have to find a correct block with the correct casting number and dates. Then the proper way is to shave the front of the block to remove all the old numbers and then re-stamp with the correct stamps. You can rent the stamps but even that is high. Seems if you shave the front, you may run into issues too but I guess it can be done.
Large cost for nostalgia but legally not numbers matching and can not legally pass off as a numbered matching car.

Easy to do at the beginning of the project. Very stressful when it comes time to sell it. Never know who comes over to buy the car. Might get a real close shave and a trip to the ocean bottom...
Seriously... IMO there are no situations where you can re stamp your block and call the car numbers matching.

When I was looking at Corvettes I went to a dealer that specialized in them. One particular car caught my eye and I asked if it was a Numbers Matching car, to which they responded "Yes." We talked a little longer and I told them I was impressed by car X because it had it's original engine, to which the dealer responded, "I don't know if the engine is original, only that it is Numbers Matching." Long story short, it was obvious to me they very carefully chose their words for this particular car. I suspect engine restamping is much more common then you might think.

I know re stamping in the corvette world is high. I seen lots of advertisements on it and it was an accepted practice. http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2012/...ping-standards/From http://engineslimited.com/cms/For more than twenty-five years, Engines Limited has supplied the nation's classic Corvette owners with numbers matching engines. Many of our services center around the block and heads of an engine. Our services include: numbers matching engine rebuilding, block stamping, block broaching, and searches for hard to locate parts. Some of the parts we sell include: blocks, heads, rebuilt water pumps, exhaust manifolds, cast iron intakes, 6-inch and 8-inch harmonic balancers, pulleys, oil pans, and 6-inch & 8-inch timing chain covers. All parts (if not rebuilt) are guaranteed rebuildable. Blocks and heads are hot tanked and magnafluxed. Machine work starts at $1200.00 for short blocks and $1600.00 for long blocks. Call for current prices and availability. We have done Bloomington Gold and NCRS (National Corvette Restorers Society) Top Flight & Duntov Marque of Excellence Award engines.

I have seen it first hand with a corvette engine. Customer bought a supposed correct 1965 327. When the block was at the machine shop in the hot tank the casting numbers that were made from epoxy fell off....lol
