I am slowly making progress on my 67 restoration but have a "rookie" question. I want to rebuild my front suspension with new bushing and paint and need to know about the springs. Do i need a spring compressor if the engine is out? Are the springs still under a lot of pressure. I just need to remove everything hopefully on Monday.
Welcome. To do it safely - yes, you will need a spring compressor. I redid the front end of my car like you after removing the engine.
You will read about using chains and other ways to "control" the spring that allow you to skip the compressor, but when you can "borrow" one from the local parts place...
Others have recreated a spring compressor with threaded rod and that is also a good way to do it if you like creating your own tools (my brother LOVES stuff like that). If you can handle our unwieldy search system - there are a few good message threads contained in here someplace about crafting up the all thread type compressors. It's Christmas week in the office and it will likely be dead slow, so I will try to remember to go looking for you tomorrow

the threaded rod works very well if you have the front end apart like you do. Its very safe. here are some pics of the set-up I used if it might help you. http://www3.telus.net/68bird/front_suspension.htm
