Can anyone post a picture of their air filter housing? I'm curious on the general area of the decals. Here are the two decals I'm pretty sure go on there. For a 68...
Classic part DT83, towards the right (driver side of air filter cover) Classic part DT128 on the left (passenger side cover)
I have a 350-2 barrel. Pretty sure these are the ones I need. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
That is what I did. The DT128 may not have actually been on there originally. There are some sources that say yes and other no. When you poll it, you'll get a spit.
Probably the standard fgf answer .... "it depends"....
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. I feel like I am diagonally parked in a parallel universe. 1968 400 convertible (Scarlet) 1976 T/A - 455 LE (No Burt) 1976 T/A New baby, starting full restoration. 1968 350 - 4 speed 'vert - 400 clone (the Beast!) 1968 350 convertible - Wife's car now- 400 clone (Aleutian Blue) (Blue Angel) 2008 Durango - DD 2008 GXP - New one from NH is AWESOME! 2017 Durango Citadel - Modern is nice! HEMI is amazing! 1998 Silverado Z71 - Father-daughter project 1968 400 coupe - R/A clone (Blue Pearl) (sold) 1967 326 convertible - Sold 1980 T/A SE Bandit - Sold
If there is one thing I've learned about these cars, there are many differences that exist. That said, I don't recall seeing that DT128 on any original '68s. It's not on my '68 or a couple survivor '68s I have pictures of.
Mine looks like Jim's. There is no sticker residue, no nothing. And it is original, in nice condition.
But we all have 400 engines. 350's may have been different.

I have never seen the DT128 on any air cleaners other than new restorations. Probably came out around the same time the 400 Red Engine sticker people put on the lid. I have a bunch of pics on engine bays and it's a 50/50 split. Most are excellent restorations. Given the sticker is a "sticker" and it has color printing I don't believe it was originally put on 68 GM cars. Why is most if not all the was put on the engine area white painted and just a few items stickers? It probably was/is used on air cleaners but your guess is good as mine as to when it started. Just don't think GM had the color label capability.
I found several articles in an early '68 "News From Pontiac", a publication with news stories from around the country about Pontiac vehicles. The articles announce the tire pump option. None are clear engine shots but I cannot see that DT128 in any of them. Here is one. You can somewhat see the known label about the air cleaner but no other one (which should be brighter and bolder).

Yes, JimH (OP of this thread) has one. Very rare, and cool!

Here was another thread on this with some other photos.
Most of the photos seem to be missing.
