Can't believe I looked into this almost 5 years ago to the day! But, I'm finally revisiting this project and want to get it done .
I have a 69 Convertible that I had the auto-trans replaced with a Tremec 5-Speed with overdrive manual.
Had someone make a shifter boot for me to cover the existing 7.5 inch by 3.75 inch hole left in console after the trans conversion. Didn't like the look of it at all so I took it out.
So I am looking to customize the console with a new shifter boot and trim ring large enough to cover the hole in the console.
Anyone out there have pictures of a customized job on their console that they would like to share? Also looking for any vendors to purchase quality shifter boot and/or trim rings. Thanks.
I can post a few picts of the custom console I built. On mine, it actually has a TH400, moved way to the rear. The previous owner's best idea was to reverse the original console to fit the original auto shifter location. Didn't work so well, and completely NOT functional.
I'll post some picts after I take a few. If you build a custom console, it really doesn't take long. I built this in about 2 hours with scrap from the basement. I post a few picts in after I get them off my phone. Added the picts.. A few things.. This is in the midst of being 100% rewired to fix all the nonsense that was 100% wrong. All the wires won't stay where they are. The two holes in front of the shifter are for Cell phones, I am awaiting the charging mounts. The bases are done in brushed aluminum (simply bent and bolted). Switches on the console are there for the time being, as I haven't been able to map all the wiring, only about 60%. But, the switches will go. One is master power and one is fuel pump. I need to add an electronic switch to shut the pump off when the oil pressure goes to zero. Also, the cup holders were labeled as 3.5" ID, but they were 3 5/8" ID, so I had to use a dremel to widen the holes. If they were the correct size, they'd be straight.
The vinyl I covered it in was about $15 at Joanne Fabrics. I bought twice as much as I needed, as I knew it was going to come apart after the wiring is done, and I'll make a new one. Next one I do, I will put padding between the wood and the vinyl. To hold it in place, Simple Velcro for now. Makes it easy to pull out to get to the stuff I need. Last piece is a brushed aluminum bracket around the shifter boot. I had to order a piece of aluminum big enough to make it. I think that was about $20, but it is 1/8x12"x48". I'll have plenty left over to finish the rest.
