I have been digging around here, and all over the internet, and have made some strides in determining all that I need, but have a couple things that I need to know for sure.
First, the car is a 1969 Firebird, and was an Auto, I am putting a 4 speed Muncie into it. I was incorrectly told that the Camaro pedals will swap right in, and found out yesterday that the Firebirds have a bolt holding the pedals in place, whereas the Camaro has a shaft with a clip. So, I either need to get a set of manual trans pedals from a Firebird (looks to be specific to 1969), or, I was thinking it might be easier to get an upper pedal bracket from a 1969 Camaro (some say Nova also works). Can anyone confirm that the Camaro bracket will bolt right into a 69 Firebird?
Next, I was also incorrectly told that the trans crossmember from the auto trans would mount right up, but the Firebird cross member is tubular, instead of stamped plate steel, so it hits the Muncie before it allows the mount to line up. So, it looks like I will in fact need a Camaro 4 speed cross member.
Finally, I was told that the driveline in the Firebird should be a 27 spline, so it should just slide right into the Muncie, but come to find out, the auto trans output shaft is about 1/4" bigger than the Muncie output shaft. Does anyone know if I can get a different yoke, or if I just need to get a new driveline fabbed up?
Finally, to mount the Z bar bracket, there are two mount holes on the inside of the frame rail, but the bracket needs to sit on the outside of the frame. Looking at the outside, I see three holes that look perfectly placed to hold the Z bar bracket. The only issue, they are drilled but not tapped. Anyone know if thats typical, if I just need to tap the holes, and mount it? I thought it would be plug and play, so was confused when I saw that the holes weren't threaded.
If anyone can answer any part of this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have done this swap (without the benefit of this board, it was here but I was not aware of it) so maybe I can be of some help. As to the pedal pivot pin, I was lucky enough to start with a pontiac set so the pedals bolted right in with no problem. My '69 had a 350, and I know that the crossmembers are different for a 400, but it was stamped steel, not tubular. As far as I know only the after maket ones are tubular. You didn't say what auto trans you are replacing, 350, 400 , other. As for the drive shaft, the 350 shaft slid right into the 4 spd (Saginaw) and then right into the 5-spd that replaced it. Not sure what the spline count is. At first look I too, thought that the holes for the z-bar bracket (outside of the sub-frame rail) weren't tapped but, when I tried one on the bolts I was surprised to find that the bolt turned right in.
Hope that I was of at least some help. Good luck with your swap, don't give up. Since you have put this much effort in to it you must be one of us who feel that shifting gears makes driving more fun. It is worth the effort. Feel free to send me a PM
Hello and welcome, sounds like you had a turbo 400. ST300, turbo 350. 2004r,small shaft m20, m21 and Saginaw have the smaller output shaft. Turbo 400, super t10, 700r4, m22, and large shaft m21 use the large output shaft. I think Hank has the t10 5speed so they must have the small output as well. The turbo 400 mount is further back, the crossmember you need is the same as turbo350, 2speed, super t10, Saginaw or Muncie. I believe the turbo 400 is 1 inch longer so check your driveshaft length. Driveshaft yolks can come in different lengths as well so check that as well. You should be able to get a yolk that will go right on to your driveshaft but universal joints are made to convert as well(I think there are only two sizes). I bought a kit to convert my pedals that required welding the bushing supports to the firewall brace and my lincage is converted from a 77 trans am. Your steering column has a collar that rotates with what gear you are in for the automatic and controls your backup lights and neutral safety switch and also controls removing your keys so be sure to lock it out somehow so it cant move. Also heres a link http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=98172 Good luck. Neill
Hey all hope all is well, first off I'm a novice. I love my 68 firebird but really would like to convert it manual. What are all the parts needed to make this change. Thanks in advance
