Hi guys, My oil filter wrench is crap. I am looking for a new one and was wondering if anyone has a favorite. I have LB manifolds and not a lot of room. I almost have a clear shot at the middle of the filter from the end if that helps. Thanks for any help. Neill

Been using this one and a flimsier version of it for the '68 for 46 years.
The bigger problem I have is the mess required to get the filter slid sideways along the exhaust pipes, frame and trans cooler lines to find that "sweet spot" when it can be rolled out. Not only do I have longbranch manifolds but also AC so most things on the right side has to be done from below.

Hey, I have the same one Jim has! And I hate it, even on my 'bird without LBM's and A/C. The sweet spot of the pivot falls right into the front suspension. I end up having to tilt the wrench at a severe angle and cross my fingers that it can catch just enough of the bottom of the filter to loosen it. From past experience, I never try to put the new filters on too tight. It just makes them that much harder to get off.
I need to tackle my coupe oil with LBMs in the next couple of weeks. Can't wait! (not)
A friend has a wrench with a 90 degree handle. Looking at it seems like it would solve the clearance issues, but I'm not sure how you could get any torque on it with that shape. He says it works well though. Unfortunately, I do not have a picture.
Maybe I'll look on Epay if I have time.

Have you tried pushing a big screwdriver between the wrench and filter to tighten up the wrench so it takes up the slack and needs less travel to break the filter loose?

That's the wrench I use on my GMC Van and it works great because the filter is out in the open but I don't think it worked on the Bird when I tried it.

I have a tool that's more modern than Jimc's, it's only 20 y.o. And, to get more grip I fold up some course emery cloth and place it between the band and the filter. I run an ACDelco filter which unfortunately doesn't have the rubberized bottom. In my case I have headers which makes the job even more difficult. I have to loosen the header in order to allow filter removal. No more headers for me, they're not worth the extra effort.

Snug filters on hand tight. Usually can get them off by hand unless on long time. When I cant, just use large slip joint pliers and slightly crunch the filter. Comes loose right away.

I have headers and found the filter was way to close and space to grab it was at a minimum.
I made a huge mess the first time. Got oil all over my header wrap which took a good while to burn off.
So new procedure is: Drill hole in filter to drain before removal replaced filter with shorter filter (napa gold #1042) oil filter wrench instead of pliers

This one is my favorite. I use it on most everything. Just enough leverage that I rarely need to put a wrench handle on it.
