Hi all,

I'm trying to replace the broken plastic accelerator rod support but can't seem to get the E-clip off the end. Is there any special tricks to this? Can it be removed without pulling the engine or distributor? There isn't much room to get at it. I have a '69 2bbl 350 manual trans Firebird if that makes a difference.

I've done it once years ago without pulling the engine. Can't remember exactly how I did it but I would imagine that I would have removed the distributor cap or entire distributor if it was in the way. Just be sure to mark the location of the rotor and vac pod so that you insert the distributor back in the correct cog or you will put off the timing.

Needle nose pliers or a small flat blade screw driver will get the e-clip off. Have some extras as it might fly off when you pull it out.

Thanks guys. I'm glad it's possible with the engine in. I didn't want this car to become a major project car - yet.

My current plan is to just get it driveable - which may become a major project - lol!

Oh, I thought I saw in the shop manual there is a washer one the opposite end of the plastic support from the E-clip. Is that true? My eye sight isn't what it used to be so I can't tell for sure if there really is one or not.

I cant remember if there is a washer or not, I just remember removing and replacing that thing with the engine in, and it is one pain in the rear, but it can be done.

Hi all,

Three and a half years later I got the accelerator pedal assembly bracket replaced. The E clip went "BING" and flew off to parts unknown so I had to buy another one. At the time I had a partial rotator cup tear so wasn't as agile to reinstall everything until now. I didn't find any washer and the replacement clip seems close so just bolted it back on the fire wall. A 3/8 combo wrench and a 3/8 Gear wrench makes the job easy. I had to do it by feel - no way to get eyes on it.
