So my wife's 93 Crapmaro finally gave it up. Actually I stopped fixing it because she wouldn't get rid of it until it didn't work anymore. So when the head gasket went she agreed to buy something else. She said if she had to make a car payment she wanted to buy a new car so we went shopping. Now she's a teacher and a save the whales type so of course we were looking at hybrids and Ecars. So I tell her a co-worker has this Volkswagen that meets her list of needs and gets great fuel milage. So we go and look at them and they are really nice. A bit over the price range but that is about par. So we found the best deal we could find and roll down and buy that sucker. Wake up the next morning to the news that VW is in big trouble for installing cheating software on their on-board computers on the very model sitting in the driveway with 37 miles on it. Well we have 2400 miles on it now and pretty much love the car the way it is but we shall see how things will shake out in the next year as we go through the recall process and see what we end up with. One day...figures. Just about our luck. The good part is it gets better milage than a Prius and it's a very sweet ride for now. The bad part is she isn't ever going to let me forget that i talked her into buying it. Whatever.
If there is anything I have learned over the past 36 years is that "it's ALWAYS" my fault".
I just let it roll off my back and go on to other things...

So, I was doing some reading on this a couple of weeks ago- what is the mileage you get with it right now? It looks like when they are plugged into the testing equipment, the engine settings change to produce a cleaner running vehicle and trick the tester. I wonder if the mileage will go up or down for the consumer?
They will make it right, and besides those engines will run forever.

Consumer Reports published results of some testing they did with a 2011 Jetta and a 2015 Golf. They used multiple drivers over the same routes. The 11 lost .7secs in 0-60 and milage went down fro 50 mph to 46. The 15 did a bit better losing only .1 sec in the acceleration and mpg dropped from 53 to 50. This is after putting to cars into test mode by disconnecting the rear wheel rotational sensors and doing some other stuff.
I figure if 50 miles per gallon is as bad as it gets I can live with it.
I wouldn't want the new software but I'm not a greenie. I read it had something to do with the injector pulses so it's a very minor tweeking of the program. However, the engineers preferred the other program for a reason, most likely driveability. The eco tune is undoubtedly leaner, probably feels alot flatter, lazy, and it wouldnt surprise me if it had a lean miss at light throttle and or idle.
